Border Patrol

From a presolicitation announcement that Social Security placed on FedBizOpps.gov:
Investigative services to be performed under contract to verify claimants' U.S. residency for the purpose of establishing eligibility and continuing eligibility for receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for the Social Security Administration (SSA). ... The service area zones are located along the Mexico-U.S. border in Texas and New Mexico. ...

SSA officials will notify the contractor of the name and address for residency verification. Upon written request, the contractor shall perform an unannounced onsite visit to the claimant's reported address to verify residency, contact one non-relative neighbor who has first hand knowledge of individual's residence and submit a written report documenting the results.

Ok. This is a contract, well, that's just grand. How much? Well, I guess that remains to be seen. And, this contratistas are going to do an onsite visit to verify residency of given individuals. Hmmm. Hmm. We're not going to verify the marriage of applicants for spouse benefits but we're going to do THIS?

Does this, by any chance, have something to do with that never enforced provision of 1986 Immigration Reform Act? The one that says that for the last 23 years we were supposed to be informing ICE (formerly known as La Migra) of the address of anyone we "know" is an illegal alien? On accounta this information would be material to tracking (at a minimum) or locating illegal aliens at the point they filed a fraudulent appl. for a Social Security number?

Jeez, why now? Just why in the heck NOW? When everybody pretty much has decided to just flag this stuff on. For reasons too numerous to mention because the number of undocs is unknown and really, really big.

Finally, inquiring minds want to know--Then what are we going to do with this information? I mean, really? And, more to the point, with what for money? Boy, the unemploymet rate for college educated people is going through the roof and we are going to contract this out? I need to go take my meds. Hep, y'all, just hep me understand this dreck!

Sorry, I see it's just for SSI. Ok, but what about other residents in the domicile having no docs? And, then what are we going to do with the info? See above.

Works for me and I'm sure most Americans would be for it as well. Of course if I'm going around the border knocking on doors, I would want to be armed with more than a pad and pencil.

This is one task I'm glad SSA is contracting out. Otherwise, this possibly dangerous task might be left to a claims rep, field rep, or to a member of management. OIG staff could do it, but there's not enough of them.
