Well, It's An Idea

     Social Security's latest idea for dealing with its shortage of field office staff is to try to persuade vets to work for free.

How about this idea? If local FO need workers and disabled people ruled not disabled need jobs, how about offering jobs to those ruled as not disabled? Sell it to Congress as way of proving that "SSA made the right decision in these cases, but these people still need help and the aging population needs better service! It wouldn't hurt to offer to close a handful of offices in each state over the next 2-5 years as an offset to keep the budgets down when the Internet service are improved.

Love it! In fact, I think tat people who are turned down should be put on a prioty list to work at either DDS or as clerks to the ALJs. Let's see if they are making the right decision indeed.

The only downside would be that the ALJs and DDS would then start saying that these people were employable but only marginal - as opposed to the super employees we usually find - and that is the reason for the slow results.

You forgot the quotation marks on "employable." Part of the disability evaluation is the ability to do a job on a sustained basis. If the ALJS and DDS were to say that individuals were unable to do the lowest level of jobs, that would simply show their decision was incorrect! However, based upon statements made about the reliability of answers provided by SSA and the lack of accountability for giving incorrect information to people, in the words of Hillary Clinton, "What difference does it make, anyhow!"

Were they paying the blind people that worked in the field offices? They had special equipment that helped them half do the job.

Due to the Deficiency Act, the Agency cannot require or request anyone to work volunteer time without compensation...
