Digital Social Security Cards

     From ThinkAdvisor:

The Social Security Administration said Friday that starting this summer, "my Social Security" portal users will be provided digital access to their Social Security number — offering "a modernized, secure and accessible alternative to the traditional physical SSN card."

The digital SSN feature "will allow account holders to conveniently display their SSN, when needed, for reasons other than handling Social Security matters," the agency said.

"This enhancement will provide individuals who have forgotten their SSN or misplaced their SSN cards a simple solution allowing them to securely view their SSN online," SSA said. "This will reduce their need for an in-person visit and/or having to wait to receive their SSN card through the mail." ...

I don't understand how this is going to work when someone needs to show their Social Security card in order to get a job or a drivers license.

  1. I‘ve never been asked for my Social Security card in any context wherein my card wasn’t also photocopied (which can’t be done with a digital display). So, I‘m not sure what the point of this is?

  2. Maybe it will be as useful as my MD license which I have had in my digital iPhone wallet for 4 years but isn't accepted anywhere and is actually invalid if I get pulled over by Maryland police. Completely useless.

  3. What’s the point of this? Nobody is going to accept it anywhere. This is a waste of money.

  4. Doge is breaking SSI and OASDI for this junk?

  5. California is offering the option of adding a drivers license to a smartphone with the proviso that one must always have their actual drivers license in possession.

  6. If physical cards are no longer issued then employers would be forced to use the digital verification. The concept of “no one will accept it” is moot if the agency produces the verification otherwise.

  7. Most entities requiring/asking for proof of SSN generally only need the SS Number (not the actual physical card), right? So if someone has lost/forgotten their SSN, this could be very helpful (no field office visit, no mail time), right? Actual digital SSN Card, down the road.

  8. Read it close.

All it says is that the full SSN will be displayed in your mySSA account so you can show it to someone. Right now, it only displays the last 4 digits.

It actually isn't going to involve a "digital SSN card" of any kind. Those thinking such a thing could happen are giving far too much credit to these people. They can't even keep the website up consistently during business hours or manage to have it display correct payment dates.

Instead, the administration has finally bumbled itself into an understanding that it has created a PR mess. They are just trying to get whatever scraps of favorable PR that they can (i.e. this, and backing off the 100% overpayment collection to limit it to 50% - that happened on April 25th. https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/reference.nsf/links/04252025032443PM
    ).

  9. They cannot call this an official ssn card because that would require a regulatory and legislative change. This is literally just a NUMI Lite in digital form. Employers, motor vehicle administrations, social services, etc. will not accept this as a proof of social security number.
