A press release from AFGE, the union that represents most Social Security employees:
American Federation of Government Employees National President Everett Kelley today issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s decision to freeze the salaries of most federal employees next year:
“For the second year in a row, President Trump has decided to deny most federal workersa pay raise next year. This is a slap in the face to the dedicated civil servants who keep our nation running and will make it harder for federal agencies to recruit and retain essential employees.
“For years, wages for federal employees haven’t kept pace with rising costs for housing, food, utilities, and other essentials. Private-sector workers currently earn 27% more on average than federal employees doing the same job. To add insult to injury, the administration is asking for special approval to pay hundreds of employees ‘requiring an extremely high level of expertise’ up to $400,000 a year – equal to the president’s base salary – even as it denies workers a basic cost-of-living raise.
“Federal employees treat our veterans and support our military, safeguard our food and air, process retirement and disability payments for tens of millions of Americans every month, and so much more. Making sure they earn a fair wage isn’t just good for them – it’s good for the quality of government services and the people we all serve.
“Because this White House refuses to recognize the invaluable contributions our federal workers make every day, I’m calling on Congress to step up and pass the Federal Adjustment of Incomes Rates (FAIR) Act, which would provide federal employees with a much-deserved 4.1% pay raise in 2027.”
Many SSA employees supported this administration. I wonder how they feel about their vote? Elections have consequences.
ReplyDeleteNo one really notices nor cares. Inflation has cooled and we’ve gotten some great raises over the years. Anything lost can be made up with overtime. Now that things are settling after the 2025 calamity, most employees I know are quite pleased. How about you?

DeleteHa! I NOTICED and I CARE! Why should I have to work OT just to maintain my lifestyle. The military gets 7% . I am a veteran and I support this. But why screw us? Make it up with OT. You must be fun at parties.

DeleteThis isn’t a raise. This is adjusting our pay for the cost of living. Get it? Cost. Of. Living. By denying us an increase, then increasing our insurance (don’t we all wish our insurance was like variable SMI?) we are taking pay cuts year after year.

I hate the argument that we can “make it up in overtime.” To begin with, some of us don’t have that kind of time- our work/life balance is already skewed largely toward work. But secondly I would rather see less overtime and get some bodies in this agency to help with the work!
We shouldn’t have to work overtime to make ends meat.
Memories of being told "you can make it up on overtime"...and then being told "You can only work for credit hours because the Regional Office put a deep cut in our overtime allocation"...
DeleteAll the government employee bashing does is hurt ourselves. One thing Doge showed was the stark difference between the security clearances between government employees and the friends of Musk. That so many people have been convinced to hate civil servants and likely be okay with replacing them with underpaid labor, like any other job, is the result of years of indifference by Democrats and unions.

DeleteI retired from SSA back in September 2010 under the old CSRS. Since then, my pension from OPM has increased by 47.21%, the same amount as the cumulative SSA COLA increases (2010 was one of the no-COLA years so the first year COLA increase wasn't prorated). In the meantime, the salary from the position I retired from has, in my old locality pay area, increased by only 32.21% over that 16 year period. A current employee at my old grade and step (13/10) is making almost $16,000 a year less now than they would be making if they had just gotten the same percentage increases as SSA retirees do. How someone could think federal employees have gotten some "great raises" over the years is beyond me.
