Michael Astrue, the Commissioner of Social Security, like the late Ted Kennedy, is from Massachusetts. Astrue has some history with the late Ted Kennedy. Here is an excerpt from the Stromata blog for October 31, 2001:
Michael Astrue, a moderate Republican whom I know slightly, today withdrew his name from consideration as head of the Food and Drug Administration. He was known to be President Bush’s top choice for the position, but Edward Kennedy, chairman of the Senate Labor Committee, announced that he would refuse to hold hearings on an the prospective nomination. Kennedy doesn’t accuse Astrue, a former general counsel of the Department of Health and Human Services and current chairman of the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council, of harboring abhorrent right-wing opinions. His “disqualification” is that he has worked for Biogen, and the Senator opposes allowing anyone with a background in the pharmaceutical industry to be in charge of the FDA.
Kennedy did support, or at least did not oppose, Astrue's nomination to be Social Security Commissioner (see pages 61 and 62). Kennedy's letter to the Senate Finance Committee was not exactly a ringing endorsement.
In my opinion,a true measure of a person. Is when you can stand against the majority. To fight for what's right. He and jfk did just that.
ReplyDeleteHow does this relate to social security? It's a civil right if one can qualify.
Alj's may learn alot from the kennedys.
Here is what Commissioner Astrue put out on the subject today, 826/09.

A Message To All SSA And DDS Employees
Subject: Senator Edward M. Kennedy
I often am amazed at the blessings in my life. One of those blessings was working with Senator Edward Kennedy many times over the past twenty-four years. His early and strong support in 2006 was the critical factor in my decision to return to public service.
Senator Kennedy was a passionate advocate for the Social Security Administration and for the people of the agency. His advocacy was particularly effective because he forged a unique relationship with former Commissioner Ball, who advised him for decades on the merits of every significant effort to improve Social Security since the passage of Medicare. In countless ways that few people appreciate, together they shaped today’s Social Security Administration.
The rare form of glioma which took Senator Kennedy’s life also took my father’s life twenty-three years ago, so I know first-hand how agonizing it is to support a loved one who is battling this disease. It is not surprising, though, that the Senator and his family continued to find ways to contribute to the public good despite the many obstacles they faced.
It is certain that there will be much discussion about ways to honor Senator Kennedy. For now, some things we at SSA can all do are to think hard about our loss, to remember that hundreds of thousands of people in comparable situations come to us each year, and to ask ourselves what more we can do in our day-to-day work to serve the critically ill and their families with more urgency and dignity.
Michael J. Astrue
Commissioner
Well, one thing our COSS could do is hire people for field offices to take and clear DIB claims in some kind of timely way. That would be simple, not heroic really, just plain common sense. That would be my suggestion anyway.
