Union Objects To Plan To Stop Policing Questionable Retirements

From a press release issued by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), the union which represents most Social Security employees:
The American Federation of Government Employees cried foul today on the Social Security Administration’s plans to rescind Social Security Rulings 66-18c and 91-1c, which allow the agency to question retirement allegations made by corporate officers and the self-employed.
“Development of questionable retirement allegations have always been an important part of what SSA [Social Security Administration] employees do to ensure that only qualified individuals receive Social Security benefits,” said Steve Kofahl, regional vice president of AFGE Council 220. “By rescinding this policy, SSA will be ignoring potential fraudulent activity by wealthy corporate offices and self-employed individuals who shift their income in order to receive SSA benefits.”

  1. Social Security benefits should be available at age 62. Period. Many people would choose to continue working which is good for the economy - no "forced" retirement. As a trade-off, additional FICA contributions would have no effect on benefits.

That would get SSA out of the business of policing earnings for retirees completely, and also from doing recomputations of benefits. This is the lion's share of PC work in January. It would also do away with the confusion over month of election for retirees. There would be a net cost to the trust fund, but it would be worth it. Among other benefits, no more of those "heart attack" overpayment letters to retirees.

  2. If I am honest I think that social security benefits should be made equal for both men and women. The SSA is crucial in this and they have to listen. We offer serviced offices london and I feel that our staff are treated are with the respect they deserve.

More of rich are getting over BS. Whitehouse probably wrote that for the Union. Like the person above said, if you are eligible at 62, you get your benefit. Why should only people Full Retirement Age or older get to earn all they want and still receive a full benefit.

  4. The "New Deal" deal for SSA RSI was that grandpa would get benefits If he gave up his job at the factory, and the son would get the newly openned job at the factory to be able to pay into the SSA fund.
Without some enforcement and monitoring of this _deal_ there will be no job for the son and a large unemployment rate.
