Ms. Duke became wistful thinking about receiving a Social Security number at a very young age.At that time one received a Social Security number only when one began working. She received her Social Security number at such a young age because she started working as an actress at a very young age. The acting itself may not have been so bad for Ms. Duke but her life around the time she received her Social Security number and for many years thereafter was grim and I'm talking PTSD-inducing grim. Bringing up those memories may have contributed to her shedding a few real tears at the end as she finalized her claim. I doubt that Ms. Duke or Social Security anticipated that this video would have such a genuinely emotional element to it.
Social Security would prefer that you not notice that Ms. Duke needed the help of her husband in applying for benefits online.
"Ms. Duke needed the help of her husband in applying for benefits online."
ReplyDeleteThat. Is. Awesome.
Can we just get rid of those awful, cheesy, ridiculous ads at the DOs and ODARs with Patty Duke and George Takei? God, they're horrible. Sulu, how far you've fallen....first TVs and now this junk!
ReplyDeleteAgree completely on the posters. This is the worst ad campaign ever. Who needs to advertise the internet anyways? Haven't most people already heard about it?
ReplyDeleteActually Ms. Duke needing her husband's help is good for SSA. It reinforces what we tell folks: have your family help if you are hesitant.
ReplyDeletenothing in this application process gives any idea of ms. duke's age wondering if she is full retirement age she could have filed on her spouse's record and waited for delayed retirement credit.
ReplyDeleteAccording to Wikipedia her dob is 12/14/1946--she is just age 65. Good point made, but we don't care--just tally those internet apps so we can tell Congress we improving customer service--defined as taking internet apps.
ReplyDeleteTrue irony--spokesperson for internet claim filing finds process so awkward and uncomfortable that she has to have husband assist. Oh, and cannot watch this on SSA computer at work--the video is blocked--had to watch it at home.
ReplyDeleteShe just happened to have her Oscar in the background. I wonder who gets to work the claim, and if there is any special treatment not to screw this one up?
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind that dramatically, her husband serves the purpose of allowing vocalization of actions that otherwise would be boring, silent, and unknown to us. Re: we don't need to advertise the internet: you are clearly too young to be a target of the campaign.
