Alan Simpson -- The Gift That Keeps On Giving

Just read Simpson's letter to Max Richtman, the head of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. How did someone as thin skinned and nasty as Simpson ever get elected to public office? How can he angrily insist that Social Security was never intended as a retirement program?

  1. Maybe because when the Social Security Act was passed, life expectancy was right around retirement age, meaning many workers would not live long enough to receive any benefits and many of those who did reach retirement age would not live many years afterwards.

  2. Sorry, when it was passed it was only a retirement program. Everything else has been added since in order to give Congress the opportunity to get their hands on more money.

  3. I might not agree with everything he says, but I like Alan Simpson for speaking his mind. Not like Obama and the rest that just tell people what they want to hear.

  4. An insurance program to provide for a modicum of income in case you outlive your personal retirement savings is not a retirement program. Or at least, it isn't a very strong one!
