Bill To End Benefits For Suspected Nazi War Criminals To Advance

     From The Hill:
The House will vote next week on a bill that would eliminate government benefits for suspected Nazi war criminals.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy's (R-Calif.) office released a schedule Wednesday outlining next week's floor agenda that showed the bill, H.R. 5739, will be considered under a fast-track procedure, indicating that it will pass easily.
There are no unrelated items in the bill, making it almost completely symbolic.  Far more money will be spent passing and implementing this than could possibly be saved.

  1. Since there are not that many Nazis remaining alive and collecting benefits, why doesn't Congress extend the prohibition to anyone who has committed war crimes or genocide? This could then be applied to others who have committed such crimes since World War 2 and to any future criminals who may immigrate to the US. And it would even apply to Americans who are guilty of such crimes against humanity.

  2. How about Congress pass some meaningful reform bills rather than waste time with this largely symbolic gesture meant to appease the masses. pathetic.

  3. Anonymous at 9:33 - "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter." Imagine for a minute DOJ makes a list of people who have committed genocide, and it doesn't include the Turks. The Armenians get upset and lobby the Hill to add the Turks. The Turks get added to a House bill, but the State department opposes it because of our trade and security interests in the region. All that drama, and it turns out none of the Turks who might be affected were ever actually in the United States or ever eligible for SS.

  4. How about suspending any government benefits for those who entered the USA illegally?

SS Benefits are not payable to anyone in the US illegally under current law. A person must be a lawful resident to receive benefits now. Of course, if they entered illegally and became legal residents later, they would be fine. By the way, a large percentage of "illegals" are people who entered legally on tourist or student visas and just never went home. So, if we are being strict about our wording, I suppose you believe they would be OK.

Ironically, someone who was never a legal resident, or someone who was here legally and earned benefits but has now lost that right, could not receive benefits while in the US, but could receive benefits if they left the US.

  7. Actually, thanks to Obama, the 5,000,000 or so that he is not going to deport (who entered illegaly) will be able to receive Social Security Benefits..
As far as the Nazis, I want to sit on the overpayment hearings as I will find they are without fault and it would be unconscionable for them to have to pay it back..
