when I see these surveys, my first thought is "What are the people who are worried doing to change their situation?"
Seriously, at some level, we all worry about what the future holds. But some people act and others do nothing, hoping that the government (or others) will take care of them. At some point people need to take responsibility for themselves. If you are truly worried about having enough money in the future, I hope you are changing your current habits.
Anonymous 4:46 - the full report asked the same question to retirees (all lumped together), and found confidence levels somewhat higher (click the "From EBRI..." text to get the full report).
One thing that is interesting in the report is that the age at workers expect to retire is much larger than the age at which workers actually have retired. The number one reason for retiring earlier than expected was health problems/disability.
I'm near retirement and have a reasonable amount savings, but it's hard to know how much is needed in retirement, because I don't see how you can estimate medical expenses (and those related to health like assisted living).
I'm assuming the survey respondents are pre-retirement; is there another survey that asks the same question 5, 10, 15 years after retirement?
