Persons With Low Educational Attainment Do Harder Work And Find It Difficult To Find Easier Jobs To Do When They Develop Health Problems

  1. Working hard used to be rewarded back in the 60's and was held equivalent to some higher education, depending on the experience, not anymore. And the workers who worked the hardest get paid the least, the gilded age and slavery restored.

  2. This is very true...people who hand stack tractor trailers and do hard physical labor are left to wolves, when it comes to finding a job in their older days...anyone on disability has a hard time finding a job period.

  3. I agree with this first post...I mean is this shocking to anyone at all? Isn't that the reason people seek a degree after high school? How many times can I remember being told, "if you don't go to college, you'll be flipping burgers".

  4. I doubt it is shocking to those who want to get rid of the grid rules for these folks who end up with no knees left, devastated spines and chronic untreated depression at age 50 or 55, millions who have done this type of work for 30 years at that age. This is the group congress and SSA is targeting for rule revisions. Oh and of course, fraud.

  5. Or perhaps the applicants lie on there applications knowing a lower education equates to easier benefits? SSA never verifies school accomplishments.. So many applicants claim 11th grade educations. Makes you wonder..

  6. As an attorney representing claimants, I send any client who only went through the 8th or 9th grade for literacy testing. Usually, someone with that level of education will read no higher than the 3rd grade level--for all practical purposes, that is at least "limited education," if not functional illiteracy. If administered the correct tests, most of these claimants will be found to have some type of learning disabilities. If I remember the test correctly, the Woodcock-Johnson test of educational achievement tests grade equivalent levels of various parameters and is useful.

10:04, what's so hard to understand? Anyone who dropped out of school because of difficulty learning probably had to perform manual labor of some type and will suffer more physical impairments by middle age. What amazes me is that people who work for SSA seem to think that these manual laborers are so cognizant of SSA rules and procedures that they can easily "game" the system. Many of my clients lack the ability to even maintain a checking account. It's amazing that some of these people have been able to conduct their affairs.

I find that about 90% of my clients have actually inflated their educational background. The most common thing is to list themselves as having COMPLETED the 10th grade, when they've actually DROPPED OUT DURING the 10th grade. They've been amplifying their actual educational achievement for job applications. And this has been proven by school records which also often document special education and some learning deficits which claimants are often too proud to admit.

  7. 10:04am, you are off base. I have seen this questioned several times, particularly when the 45-49 grid rules are in play.

  8. Unfortunately, the schools in our state have begun destroying the school records of anyone over 21, making it much harder to show low IQ before age 22.
