The language patterns, syntax, etc. were the same, the person threw out some facts only an insider would know, and they seem personally invested. I'm guessing it's a disgruntled Asian-American employee; whether they are rightfully disgruntled, of course, is something I have no clue about sitting in Region 4.
There are obviously a few disgruntled SSA or ODAR employees posting. We are not the ones who can do much about that. But I think there are also some paid shills which are sprinkled though out the otherwise credible media. That's how you get NPR and Washington Post stories casting doubt on the integrity of the disability program. Unfortunately, regulators seem to react by making the standards even tougher than they already were.
I think you know who I am and that I may have some credibility. I regret to inform you that there is quite a bit of discrimination, prohibited personnel practices and favoritism/nepotism that goes on just below the surface. The Agency excells at hiding the bruises. The way that poll is framed is somewhat offensive. How about adding an option such as "because there is some truth to it"?
Not much love there for the Asians huh? Makes one wonders: must there be some sort of unpleasant life experiences in the past in relate to this gentle, model minority by some of the vicious bloggers of this post?
Do Asian-Americans have a legitimate beef with Affirmative Action? Absolutely! Oh, and I'm not Asian. Just look at the average, high, and low scores at any prestigious university and a clear pattern quickly emerges: Asians are at the top, followed by whites with Hispanics and blacks at the bottom. I believe the reasons for this are mostly cultural. Asian kids are pushed to succeed by their parents, etc. They are extremely competitive. Blacks, on the other hand, react negatively towards other blacks who try to do well. I've heard many times, "What's with you? Tryin' to get in the House." If you don't know what I mean, google 'house vs. field.'
This is a very realistic life discussion that have profound effect on any SSA employee and his or her respective workplace . No censorship is needed, please. That's the last thing we need! Anyhow, I concur with Tim because we all have to thrive harder in life as much as the determination of this unknown Asian employees, or ex-employee or just a concerned Asian person, who has recently created a mini-uproar on this blog site. She or he was right to speak up and may God bless him or her!
9:22 PM The bias is not "implicit." It has been legalized! As for the managers hiring "like-minded" people, the "victim" mentality is ingrained and reinforced in universities across the country, while those who refuse to be "victims" are ostracized! This can be seen in blacks, women and Hispanics, especially those who have studied under more liberal professors. Naturally, liberals are more likely to work in government... As for the legal bias, if "less qualified" candidates are advanced in the name of Affirmative Action, then "more qualified" candidates have to be excluded. The white percentages are so big that they are not greatly effected. Plus, white candidates often have family that graduated from a particular university, and are often given "credits" for it. This is especially true at the most prestigious universities. Therefore, Affirmative Action occurs largely at the expense of Asian candidates. It has to come at someone's expense, and it's not going to happen to the children of those with deep pockets.
My biggest complaint with Affirmative Action isn't that "less qualified" candidates are advanced, but rather that those who are qualified are painted with the same brush.
This survey wouldn't be up if it was about An African-American or Hispanics venting about an unfair and discriminatory treatment. Am I correct my man? I am 1/2 black and still find it very distasteful! Free speech is why these people came to our country.
Can we all get along at SSA? Our main focus is external assistance not to spend on internal racial strife. Yes, we're not perfect and for obvious reasons; however, we could and should be better as an organization that touts diversity and equality. I understand that certain groups of employees would feel left out because we try to prove ourselves as the better one in dealing with the minorities when we actually left out the others because they do not speak up or represent themselves enough due to cultural, religious, or other reasons...etc the person or persons was or were a bit near the edge of crossing the line with some aggressive language in past blogs, but one can sense the frustration in tone. Asians are not really known for public venting ! and if this is a sign of that to come, then SSA must have been done a great harm and injustice to whoever venting through those blogs. From: an ODAR employee, peace out!!
Walking around ODAR in Falls Church (DC) and you will be convinced that SSA is NOT the better one ***!?*** Based, on the languages, and tones used from those past blogs, my guess is that possibly an EEO complaint was filed or a harassment complaint was logged but was ignored or dragged on by the bureaucracy within the agency??? As we all might agree on one thing, is that SSA has been best known for its time-stalling in decision-making. This in turn translated into "justice delayed is justice denied". I had co-workers who are Asian in ethnicity who too, were no doubt hard-working group of individual who wants no part in any noise-making at work. That kind of normal work attitude is bound to catch the unwanted attention of rogued TE, OS, Assistant District Managers, District Managers and so on...etc Those who would not hesitate to commit career-damaging infractions at will by not following the Merit Protection Principles. In the end, it is still the rank and file who would suffer and suffering translated into anger and cries for justice. One should pause to thanks our God for modern day media technology which is now being taking advantaged of by the person/persons in which this post was targeted and ridiculed.
Instead of providing these bias options, why not ask the question?

ReplyDeleteImplicit bias is not the American way. Please be nice to one another. This is why/what the person or persons was/were right to calling it out.

Well said and it needs to be repeated here at SSA and other governmental institutions.
