A Nice Christmas Eve Story

KARE, a television station is reporting on the horrible hearing backlogs at Social Security. As they note, 10,000 people a year die while awaiting a hearing.

  1. How many die while on disability each year? And of those 10,000 that die, how many die from non-disability related causes such as accidents? Not that it is any solace to the deceased, but if there are survivors the hearing still can proceed and they will be paid what the deceased would have been paid if the person was disabled.

  2. In 2007 the rate of death for all US citizens age 55-64 was 8777 in a million so somewhat below the ones waiting for a hearing

  3. Death rates in 2007 for ages 55- 64 ranged from 12470 per million in Mississippi to 6670 and 6660 in Minnesota in Vermont

  4. Come to think of it life expectancies in this country are declining for this group period aren't they? How does this compare to western democracies? Something else to be proud of? If they can raise retirement ages and wipe out disability maybe this program can start turning a profit and paying no one eventually.
