Denying Disability Claims Doesn't Cause People To Go Back To Work; They Just Get Poorer And Poorer

  1. Just what I would expect to see from a progressive Beltway Bandit think tank. Amount of trust in this is less than I give the current potus.

    1. 10:21. The data here are based on a published academic study in a prestigious journal. The data are from the Social Security Administration’s own records (two of the authors are SSA researchers). SSA knows your annual earnings of course, and they now whether you applied for disability and the outcome. These are just facts that CBPP turned into a colorful chart. Unwillingness to believe the results is a personal character flaw of yours. The rest of the world is unaffected by your willful ignorance, unless you are in a position of power, in which case we are all screwed.

  2. No study is needed to know that it's a cruel system for disability applicants. The system strongly incentivizes people to not try to work while a disability claim is pending. Unfortunately, there are more than a few ALJs who will hold any work attempt against a disability claimant, no matter what the failed work attempt rules say. The unfavorable decision will say something like "The claimant's work attempt, even for a short duration, shows he is able to do more than claimed," even if the claimant was soon fired for inability to do the job. So, no work income for about 2 years, assuming your case goes to an ALJ. Few can endure 2 years of no work income without going broke. Once they are broke and out of work for 2 years, and sick, they are unlikely to find any job they can do which someone would hire them for. For many it is a downward spiral from there, especially if they live in a state with crappy or non-existent healthcare for the poor.

  4. I posted the 10:21 comment, I knew exactly what the response would be, I even made a point of using the EXACT same language used on the blog when it is attacking studies that do not support the feelings of those on the blog. Thanks for proving my point oh so well. Duncans.

  6. Let's get rid of Social Security altogether and pay everyone a guaranteed annual income. That will solve all our problems.

  7. "SSA knows your annual earnings of course..."

No, SSA knows your reported annual earnings that may or may not reflect an individual's actual annual earnings. There is a big distinction.
