From WAVY:
The man accused of shooting a 52-year-old security officer Feb. 8 at a U.S. Social Security Administration building in Norfolk has died.
Federal court paperwork says 44-year-old William D. Rankin died Wednesday at a hospital. ...
According to the authorities, Rankin had been taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries after the shooting. Staff at the hospital pronounced him deceased Wednesday.
The security guard he injured in the shooting was taken to the hospital as well, but was expected to fully recover.
Can anyone recall any prior fatal shooting at a Social Security office?

ReplyDeleteMan Shot To Death At Detroit Social Security Office
CBS Detroit reports that "One man is killed, another flees on foot Friday night around 5:30 p.m. after a Detroit security guard fires nine shots at two men who jumped a fence at the Social Security office near Wyoming and 7 Mile Road."
Update: There was a break-in at the Social Security office but there are serious questions about the security guard's behavior.
20+ years ago, a claimant walked into the Grand Rapids, MI hearing office asking for the ALJ who heard his case and subsequently denied him. Thankfully, it was a Fri afternoon and the ALJ was not there. The claimant then pulled out a gun and shot himself in the head in the lobby.
ReplyDeleteI had a hearing with that ALJ the following Monday. Security was outside the building and personally escorting all people who had Social Security business up to the suite. The ALJ was a little rattled, but otherwise fine. He was relieve that he was actually golfing on that Fri.
But the Grand Rapids case was not a fatality. I heard he had an antique small caliber weapon and only knocked himself cold.
ReplyDeleteIt is very important for the OHO security guards to be alert and observant. The OHO facilities are high stress emotionally charged venues that could be prone to acts of violence. Some appear to be very capable and professional; some appear to be a worthless rent a copy.

ReplyDeleteSeems like there might not have been substantial evidence to deny the claim.
The main shooting out West was at the Las Vegas Federal Building in January 2010. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Las_Vegas_courthouse_shooting
ReplyDeleteThe Federal building had basically 9 floors with ODAR on top and bankruptcy court in the middle. I kind of knew the 72-year-old security guard who was killed.
The shooter was so dumb. He was already on SSI but was just mad Nevada reduced his monthly benes. Apparently, he was targeting judges but they have nothing to do with reducing the SSI amount. Just senseless.

I have a vague recollection of being told he was denied because he did not have appropriate immigration status, but I could be wrong about that.
