DOGE Cancelling Enumeration At Birth Contracts Creating Additional Work For SSA

      From the Portland Press Herald

The Social Security Administration is requiring new parents in Maine to register for a Social Security number for their newborn by visiting one of the state’s eight Social Security offices and no longer allowing them to simply fill out a form at a hospital, according to an email sent by Maine officials this week.

Advocates for pediatrics in Maine immediately criticized the move as burdensome, unnecessary and unfair. …

The email notice sent on Wednesday by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services to “birth certifiers” says that “effective immediately, the option for parents to participate in the enumeration at birth process will be suspended.” …

There’s a report that these contracts have been cancelled in five other states! The reason may be that the states collect information on the race of the children but I thought all states did that.

  1. It is a retaliation because Governor Janet Mills publicly challenged Trump over trans athletes. It makes no sense to cancel Enumeration At Birth contracts. It creates additional work for field office employees when they struggle to keep up with their current workload.

  2. I believe it’s because these states allow you to change your gender on your birth certificate. A foolish thing which requires sane oversight.

  3. Cue Susan Collins with her worthless *concern* and no actual action to do a damn thing about it.

  4. All 5 states, Maine, Michigan, Rhode Island, Arizona and New Mexico have outspoken Democratic Governors. Sounds like retaliation… awesome.

  5. Which means that timely disability applications cannot be filed for those born extremely premature or with devastating birth defects

    1. Once fetuses transition to babies, those freeloaders are on their own. Very similar to when soldiers transition to veterans.

  6. The EAB base contracts do not involve any DEI or similar surveys like the ones listed on DOGE site, so it appears they cancelled the DEI survey portion, unless the base EAB functionality was bundled into this contract. In which case, the cancellation would appear to also cancel EAB itself. Need to look up the actual contracts for the listed states and find EAB contracts for the rest and compare.

  7. I you go to FPDS,GOV and enter enumeration in search box, then select social security, the base contracts for EAB appear and are for small amounts.

  8. It could also be that Maine allows you to change sex/gender data as well as a code of X for nonbinary. I'm not sure this is the same across the other states listed.
This is an absolute travesty. I'm sure Senator Collins will express grave concern.

  9. Unfortunately punishing the people for their governor’s actions of allowing the changing of sex on the birth certificate. Trying to get the masses to act against the one misbehaving.

    1. Recognizing that sex can be ambiguous at birth, and that a choice can be made by the parent about how to respond to that, is not misbehavior. But I guess bigots are gonna bigot.

  10. New press release saying it was a mistake and has been reversed. How many more stupid decisions will need to be reversed?

Press release says as a leader I will admit my mistakes and make them right.

How can he make right decimating SSA and giving access to unqualified people?

  11. Wow! Was definitely retaliation! But the publicity was too much!! Dudek just issued a press release reversing this!!!
