There was an earlier report that the President planned to shut down the Social Security Advisory Board (SSAB). It wasn't clear at the time whether that was happening then or was something to happen in the future. I still don't know what the intent was at that time but the SSAB is still in business. They just issued a statement on Supplemental Security Income and U.S. Territories.
My understanding is that all of the SSAB staff are all being let go with a few months of severance. (And/or potentially offered reassignment like other SSA staff? I'm not sure if that ended up being the case here.) I think they may still be working right now, but not for long.
ReplyDeleteOnce the staff are gone, even if the Board itself continues to exist in name, I don't know how they'll get much of anything done. Very sad - undermining an important resource on Social Security.
Severence is based on years of federal service--you'd have to have worked for a long time to get months of it, but people can apply for unemployment too. Anyone who took the fork won't get severance. I don't think SSA has let SSAB staff transfer to frontline work.
