Reporter Didn't Enjoy Visit To Field Office

Rick Tosches has written a column for the Colorado Springs Independent that he's titled "A dispatch from Crazytown, aka the Social Security office." He claims there were no chairs in the waiting room and that he had to wait over two and a half hours to be "served". Also, he wasn't too impressed by the other people he saw in the waiting room.

  1. Too bad he didn't know you could do this on line

Of course then he wouldn't have had to be exposed to the kinds of people he is better than

  3. His story doesn't make sense...paragraph 3-4, he says there is no chair.

But in paragraph 10, he says, "I settled into a chair."

  4. I suspect this guy is one of those people that takes pictures at Walmart of people he doesn't like the appearance of and posts them online as well, but you have to put this whole thing in perspective. This is Colorado Spring, where they have not one, but two honorable mentions on the Southern Poverty Law Center Hate Map.

I'm also fairly sure they are in the region of Colorado that now wants to secede from the rest of the state. Stranger yet, however, is the fact that they are home to a large Army base and national missile defense type stuff, so you would expect a more normal population that wouldn't tolerate this guy writing garbage in the local paper.

  5. Charles, you need to find a better class of commenters. #3 has reading comprehension problems and #4 appears to be ignorant.

  6. In the SSA office you find a cross section of America's old, poor, and medically impaired. Those who you don't find are the rich. Don't even disparage them. And the wait time? Thank our Congressional wing nuts who have turned off the flow of public service monies for those who they think don't vote for them. The brunt of the joke was who?

  8. I would have offered to mail the 1099s to his parents' address of record (but could not disclose the address to him).

I think it's a pretty typical reaction of someone who hasn't been to an SSA field office before. They think we deal with little old retired ladies when in fact reality is frequently Crazytown.

  9. Crazytown sounds about right. Wish our office had the plexi-glass barriers in the windows.

Also, I think too many people confuse Social Security with social services. Believe me, I am a claims processor, not a "case worker".
