Is it just me or does it seem a bit surprising that Social Security Commissioner Michael Astrue has not appeared before the House Social Security Subcommittee since May 1, 2007, almost a year ago?
The chairman of the Subcommittee, Mike McNulty, is retiring after this Congress ends. McNulty's health is a factor in his retirement. McNulty has post-polio syndrome. You would think that the Subcommittee's work would go on even if McNulty's health forces him to slow down a bit.

I believe they have been busy, but not with hearings. Behind the scenes, it appears McNulty has been very busy defending SSA against the attempt to turn it into an national identification and immigration enforcement agency.

He sent another "dear colleague" today on another provision in the Shuler bill that would force anyone with multiple employers into an SSA field office to prove ID and earnings every year - that's 45 million people. There were 48 million total visits to field offices last year; so this provision would swamp the SSA.
