Social Security Subcommittee Democrats Named

The House Ways and Means Committee has finally announced its subcommittee assignments for this Congress, at least for the Democrats. I can't find an announcement about the Republicans. Below is the lineup for the Social Security Subcommittee. Let's hope we can get some oversight hearings in this Congress. I've never before seen the passivity displayed by the Social Security Subcommittee in the last Congress.

Chair: Rep. John B. Larson

  • Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr.
  • Rep. Linda T. Sánchez
  • Rep. Brian Higgins
  • Rep. Steven Horsford
  • Rep. Earl Blumenauer
  • Rep. Terri A. Sewell
  • Rep. Gwen Moore

We need to start making good faith demands of these people and making the destruction of this program a major public issue just like the rest. Really, based on it's popularity with the public and it's longevity this program should be the major issue after the pandemic. We have all been too damned quiet and cooperative in letting the lights get turned out. Time to raise less corn and more hell as the old populist political fighters used to say. This has been so successful for the Koch's and Heritage Foundation because of the lack of disinfecting sunlight on this issue.

Will they get rid of government pension offset? Or at least change some of the rules to reduce the impact of government pension offset?

The problem with SSA lies within SSA itself. Too many folks are not at all concerned about service to the public but instead only know how to crunch the numbers to suit their needs. It's a common theme at hearing offices because the management knows nothing else.

Re GPO--the need is to either raise taxes or cut benefits, perhaps not dollar wise but eligibility, not pay some who receive a higher government pension. GPO and WEP actually make sense and are fair in all but a few cases--semi-low pensions and low SSA benefit amounts.
