Social Security Employee Finalist For Cost-Cutting Idea Award

Christie Dickson of Alabama, a Social Security employee, is a finalist for a White House Securing Americans Value and Efficiency (SAVE) Award. Dickson suggested scheduling Social Security appointments online.

Yeah, what a great idea--would totally crash the FO appointment system. Of course, she works in ODAR, so has no clue how the appointment sytem works. And the Obama adm picked this as one of the four best ideas out of 38,000 submitted? Tells you all you need to know about FOA(Failed Obama Administration).

As the manager of a Social Security Office-our own employees make mistakes by scheduling appointments in the wrong slots-there are various types of appointments that need different lengths of time. This demonstrates the incompetence of the people in charge

This is a really good idea and I hope it drives some change in the SSA appointment system. As a field office manager I am aware that our system is antiquated and needs a complete overhaul, including online access. Sometimes it takes an outsider to suggest something that should be obvious to us, but which we don't see because we have come to accept our current limited and outdated software that would never be used in any private industry application. The fact that our own employees make mistakes in scheduling appointments points out the validity of seeking solutions. If new professional software can allow the public to make their own appointments without needing employee help this would be an added benefit.

You have got to be kidding. I hate to be so overtly offensive, but you are a perfect example of the cluelessness that has exacerbated the crisis in the FO's. The appointment scheduling mistakes are overwhelmingly due to the 800 number. Mistakes in the FO's are caused by people who are rushed and harried because of--wait for it--not enough staffing. Furthermore, appointments are necessary because--not enough staffing for walk-ins. Playing games with appointment schedules is bad enough now--what happens when the public makes unnecessary appointments at inappropriate times and makes it even harder to complete work that is already backlogged? People will be making more online appointments to check the status of their cases which are backlogged because of too many appointments and not enough staff. It's just dumb, plain and simple.

I have to disagree with you, A/3:13DM. Managers have too little control and input over the way our appointments are scheduled now. No business lets members of the the public decide when to come in or even IF to come in. I'm so old fashioned (remember me, the dinosaur DM?) I like'd like to handle LSDP's and simple SSA-1/2's via walk-in.

If you think about it, it takes a lot of money to just to schedule claims appts. You could be half-way through an LSDP in the length of time it takes to get through the prompts on the Toll Free number's first three screening attempts. So, we should put our money into DO staffing and put the service where the people are. NO

USCIS has had an online self-scheduling appointment system for couple years.

So no reason SSA couldn't have some type of online self-scheduling appointment system.

Now whether this saves any money who knows. I tend to lean toward the SNL skit of the news conference with Obama and the President of China and he asks Obama "How come all your ideas to save money involve spending more money."
