Baltimore Sun On Location Of National Computer Center

I have commented before that the Baltimore Sun hardly seems to notice what goes on at the largest employer in its area, a situation which I find deplorable since it conveys the message that what goes on at the Social Security Administration is unimportant. The possibility of an important new National Computer Center for Social Security somewhere within 40 miles of Social Security headquarters is finally attracting the Sun's attention. The Sun is running an editorial pushing for the National Computer Center to be located in a brownfields area along the route of a proposed 14 mile rail line between Woodlawn where Social Security's central offices are located, and Hopkins Bayview. Brownfields are abandoned or underused industrial and commercial facilities available for re-use. The Sun wants a twofer. They want to use the rail line as a reason to locate the National Computer Center in a rundown area of Baltimore County and to use the National Computer Center as a justification for funding to build the rail line through the rundown area.

Readers who live in the area can tell us how plausible the Sun's plan is.

One of the dirty little secrest of the Redline is that the current SSA bigwigs do not want it stopping near their campus due to "security reasons". The desperate Redline proponents never talk about thisnor do they talk about the Federal requirement that employees have free parking. This facility is going on the 95 corridor just like the Base Relocation jobs are aclrea

Supposed to be clearing out of Metro West sooner or later to some place where there won't be bullet holes in the windows.

So why in the world would SSA want to build anything inside of Baltimore City.

and the redline - which should have been built 30 years ago......

most people drive to SSA to work - in very expensive cars (check the parking lot) .......the traffic gridlock on the west side of Baltimore / Woodlawn during the six hours or so of rush hours is appalling......due to poor planning and zoning that allows major office building development in residential areas without adequate highway access......

and Baltimore with a Mayor that steals gift cards meant for poor kids.......and a crime rate that is disgusting.......it's time to get out of the area.....

Kind of funny that SSA would be near railroad tracks, when SSA itself is considered to be a train wreck.

"Brownfields" is a term for areas of industrial pollution.

The single most important consideration re location is convenience of mass transit.

Federal requirement that employees have free parking? There is no such thing.
