SSI Is Not Enough To Live On

From a fact sheet prepared by the Technical Assistance Collaborative:
People with disabilities who receive SSI [Supplemental Security Income] payments continue to be the nation’s poorest citizens. In 2010, the annual income of a single individual receiving SSI payments was $8,436 – equal to only 18.7% of the national median income for a one-person household and over 20% below the 2010 federal poverty level of $10,830. Since the first Priced Out study was published in 1998, the value of SSI payments compared to median income has declined precipitously – from 24.4% of median income in 1998 to 18.7% in 2010 – while national average rents have risen over 50% during the same time period.
In 2010, as a national average, a person receiving SSI needed to pay 112% of their monthly income to rent a modest one-bedroom unit. In the 12 years since the first Priced Out was published, the amount of monthly SSI income needed to rent a modest one-bedroom unit has increased an astonishing 62 percent. People with disabilities were also priced out of smaller studio/efficiency units, which averaged 99% of monthly SSI.

You sir, or ma'am, are a perfectly uneducated example of someone who likes to THINK they know what they're talking about.. instead of believing or hearing what you've heard passed on from friends and relatives, you should do a simple search about how working with ssi affects things. Tradition is literally holding people back with all the totally fictional "facts" your parents told you so do some reading before judging. These "supplemental" benefits stop all together if you make decent money or have anything deemed as "extra" if it's worth 2000$ or more. So dont so quick to point the finger like a spoiled and overly privileged child.

Because all that is so easy for a disabled person.. smh

I've worked since age 14 (Now 52), got hurt on the job at a local refinery, was on workman's comp while I went through a year and a half of physical therapy to get use of my arms again, oh and had to have rib removed. They labeled it thorasic outlet due to compression syndrome. I never filed for ss disability. My mind was on getting back to work. Started small, built up still working with more pain then anyone should tolerate. 4+ years later started having heart and seizures, can't work losing time, short term memory not good. Filed for ss disability was told not enough points in the last yr so don't qualify ssdi... really paid in all these years just to be told screw you, go back to work for 6 more months! No one wants someone that physically can't work, savings gone and have to wait 5 months for ssi to kick in. I have never mooched ever, raised a son by myself, put him through college etc and now I'm going to be forced to live on 700 a month. Sold everything I worked my ass off for.... please tell me how human life matters? Guess if you're living the life it's easy to judge others, I pray for you that it never happen to you.

I cant even get my 8 grandkids a birthday or Christmas gife. Those of you who have money all over the place would never know what it feels to live this way. I was a wafe and mother for 22yrs, shouldnt that count for something, shouldnt that go towords working point beingbthat being a stay at home mom is a 24hr job, trying to raise our kids to be honest and kind for the future, feeding them, clothing, taking then tobdoctors, sleeping by them because they are so sick, pushing them to be the best they can be for the future? Why is it we get 750 a month and cant pay for all our meds, pay our bills in a timely manner. Im sure ill get some crazy answer, yet football players make millions as well ans actress and actors and so many more, why is thei job so much more than the job of a mother!i need more tha 750, not to party on, i dont party, not to waste, because i dont waste, but for a good nights sleep without worry... help me with this please, i a 100% Trump supporter, now i need him to be a supporter for those of us who can't eat, pay bills and buy birthaday and Christmas gifts? Im a proud woman reaching out for more than a 50 dollar a month raise! I pray so hard Trump will read this and his heart strings get pulled and get us out of poverty, millions of people that have so much more than they deserve, wasting their moneyy on drugs and we get punished!

And of course if you warm that little $65-80 Er month you get to keep, you lose it immediately from food stamps if you are receiving them, so then your back to exactly what you had anyhow. The people on here know nothing. And anyone claiming SSI recipients are not really sick or disabled are liars and biased. You guys also have RSDI and SSI completely mixed up! Different rules entirely! But no one who is coming here to ridicule and judge are going to take time to actually read anything I say anyway, even though I absolutely know every single rule and law surrounding both programs. The differences, the limitations and all of it because I have been forced to live it. Why waste my breath and knowledge on morons however! Those who get benefits know the truth. Those who are here to claim we just want free rides etc are idiots to the highest level, and deserve to become disabled themselves and forced to live as we have! Also people who do not know, why tell them if no one reads the actual facts? Someone who believes the disabled are all liars and rich, are never going to change their opinion because they are a lost cause.

SSI is a poverty trap. NOT a handout.

I was AGAIN, thinking about the ways in which SSI is beyond CRUEL, and was reminded of the rule, made in 1972, enacted in 1974, of;

In kind support. It states that ssi recipients are not allowed to receive more than $20.00 a month. That means that anyone who wamts to give you money over 20 bucks cant. This rule is grossly outdated. $20 is nothing these days! This needs to be ammended or done away with altogether. No one has any money these days anyway and if you find someone willing to give money, then let them. The person receiving it needs it and if the person has it to give, thats no ones business, especially not the government! There should be no rules regulating financial support. We all know that $750 a month is a joke to try and live on. With no help. The government is living in denial. It continues to ignore ssi, not updating this program in damn near 50 years has got to be geounds for a major lawsuit, to make people suffer under these inhumane laws. To punish peoole when their bank accounts go over 2000$ if criminal.

I was talking to someone today, who basically said, the whole program needs revamping, ALL of it! Not just little peices here and there.

Why is an SSDI recipient allowed more money? For the same disability?

I feel like the people are the ones who are going to have to ask for specific changes. Another one I would like to add, is, if they dont make ssi and ssdi one program, have medicaid pay for health club memberships like medicare does. The people who get medicare get more money, yet get free health clud membership and the poorer disabled on ssi, if they want to work out have to pay for it out of their checks. Not everyone is going to want one or be able to work out. Some of us need it. Not fair or right.

Hi, I've learned allot about being poor now, I worked in home exteriors and construction from 84 to 2003. In 97 I got hurt pretty bad while I was working. Long story. I kept working though until I lost contractors from not being able to be there and work, and building slacked up quite a bit too, I started looking for different jobs. I worked at different times at two different ones, but ended up being let go. I was seeing drs at the time, I had severe depression and severe back pain. I was coerced to apply for disability by my cousin and my wife. I did and was rejected. I tried a second time this time with an attorney. I won. When I got my letter of approval they could only give me SSI. I didn't know what that was. It was a headache is what it was. I was grateful to get it but I struggled. They told me I didn't have enough credits to get awarded SSD. I talked to them but obviously they couldn't help me. I was too young I guess. I have been through so much and lost so much. It hard. My wife passed as well. I've got more health issues in my 50 s now I won't go into. I don't want to be negative because I pray that God will heal me everyday so I can get into a great business. I'm trying to learn another trade I hope will be lucrative. I believe there is hope at least I'm believing. We will see. Thanks for reading.

my daughter was born with a disability and receives ssi,I agree with so many here.Nobody talks about or even considers that many parents can't even go to work because they taking care of there disabled child that is an adult and can not live on there own.I love my child too much to push her of to an institution that would cost the government way more money plus ssi. So where is the caretakers adjustment for not being able to work ? why is there no consideration ? Anybody ever thought of that? I am just worried to death what happens when we can not take care of her anymore! I hope and pray for god to make a better way every day! You all have a blessed life !

At the very minimum ssi needs to pay the minimum wage, full time. 160 hrs per week. Currently $783(2020 amount) divided by 160 hrs is $4.89 an hour. Minimum is a measly $7.25 an hour. 7.25-4.89=2.36 x 160 hrs = 377.60 + 783 = $1160. They need to raise it in align with minimum wage. I know i work my ass off to care for myself alone, disabled. It causes me a lot of pain. But i work more than 8 hours doing it, shopping for the cheapest, cooking, schlepping, cleaning, laundry, doctors appointments, managing my illness, etc. mother isn't the only unpaid labor. Theres house keeper too. $1160 isnt enough but thats at least where it will start. Ive read ideas to raise it $200?, thats not gonna do anything. Raise the minimum wage to $15 and raise ssi and ssdi and ss to that too. $2400 a month, i could eat and relax on that amount. And not have to worry about finding a partner, its very difficult to find decent people these days.

$12 increase. It might as well be .12 cents. Just because ssi people dont have money doesn't make them not know the value of money or the actual cost of living, this is bs. Vote for elizabeth warren, she is the only one who has directly spoken about ssi increase, though not anywhere near enough.

Raise ssi to at least $1200 to start
Allow at least $1000 earned income or more(taxes makes it way less)
Increase the ASSet limit to at least $100000 (mortgage anyone?) should be one mil
Allow marriage without penalty so people can collect spouses income when deceased(old age is very expensive)
Get rid of in kind support
Re jig section 8 so that rents remain the same, otherwise the increase will cancel out the ssi increase you pay 150 now, 30% of 1200 is $400 leaving 800 left. If they don't re jig section 8, then the states will profit. Section 8 will profit.
Same for food stamps, re formulate so the amount stays the same or eve increases. Food should be at the minimum 400-600 a month. Allow it at restaurants. Smart people will go out to eat 1-2x a month. Idiots will spend it all in one week. So? Cooking, cleaning up food and getting the food, sucks balls! We've got enough health issues etc.

Almost 10 years this blog has existed and not one change has been made. Punishing the weakest for things beyond their control. Ssi=$4.89 an hour, 40 hours a week! For the disabled. Go USA!

There needs to be a yearly stimulus added for the ssi recipients since its impossible to save or pay for any big ticket items, like $1500-2000 yearly. Car repairs, furniture, doctors, washer/dryer, home repairs, computer, etc. Paying it right before Christmas time would be best, like by black friyay.

Living on $700 a month is a joke. After I pay all my bills and buy food because they think $29 a month in food stamps is enough, I am broke. If something breaks on my car or around the house I have to beg for help from family because I cant afford to get it fixed.

And as for you scum bags saying get a job, I hope you find out one day just what its like and eat your own words!
