From a press release:
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado announced Justin Skiff, age 36, of Castle Pines, was sentenced to six months in prison for wire fraud, social security fraud, and money laundering.
According to the plea agreement, beginning around August 2019 and continuing through September 2021, Skiff used his position as a claims specialist with the Social Security Administration (SSA) to fraudulently obtain money from the SSA. Skiff used his knowledge and access to establish Social Security Numbers for ten fictitious children. He then established fictitious records of entitlements for surviving child benefits which he connected to the record of a real deceased individual. These benefits were deposited into a bank account accessible to Skiff through debit cards he directed to be mailed to a P.O. Box to which he had access. Skiff withdrew money and made purchases from this account from October 2019 through September 2021 for a total amount of $324,201.44. ...

Wonder how much he made that they did not catch
I'd guess they got it all. They have records of every claim he worked on and processed. Once they suspected him, this would be an easy case to figure. Plus, I think he used obviously fictitious names for the made up children.
Six months? Should be at least six years without parole.
Seems like a pretty good plea deal for him, only serving six months. And he has 28 days to report. I'm guessing he is white.
Unless I missed it, I saw nothing about restitution? And he only got six months? Got got paid to go to prison for $54k a month. Not a bad deal honestly LOL
As an agency employee, I have to say this type of thing absolutely infuriates me. The US attorney had a slam dunk case, and yet they let him plead out.
They should have thrown the book at him and let him spend a few years being Big Bubba's significant other in a federal penitentiary.
Of course, it isn't about justice, but rather getting the biggest PR writeup for the least work.
10 kids to draw on one dead guy? Why?
Family max would be burned up by 4 kids, tops.
He didn't get arrested for being shady. He got arrested for being stupid.
@123--He put two kids on 5 different records. He was getting $1800+ per kid so probably waited for someone with a $2500+ PIA who had no spouse to die before creating two kids IDs to put them on the record.
@1215--I believe 10 kids at close to $2K per kid would be closer to $20K per month for some months. Part of the plea deal involved restitution.
I wonder if he will be collecting Social Security benefits when he turns of retirement age?
He would have paid in while working for SSA. If he's not in prison, he should be able to draw benefits like any other ex-con.
