The Attacks On Social Security Never Stop

Michael Hiltzik of the Los Angeles Times has quite the takedown of a ridiculous piece on Slate by Eric Boehm and Celeste Headlee titled “Social Security Doesn’t Make Sense Anymore.” Hiltzik describes the Slate piece as full of "misconceptions, inaccuracies, misrepresentations, and flat-out lies about" Social Security.

They keep dancing around the glaring truth, in a country of billionaires, some need to pay more than they do. Couldn't they forego that next yacht so that a homeless person would have a roof over their head?
Social Security is necessary to many people, me included. I work also, but social security pays the rent.

I disagree with the conclusions of the Slate piece but the LA Times critique wasn't any more accurate.

Michael Hiltzik is one of the only journalists working for a major news outlet who actually understands how Social Security functions.

The problem is nobody is sure what they want Social Security to do.

Here, on the blog, wanting easier access to disability benefits without so many inconsistencies and hoops to jump through and SSI to pay a livable amount.

Outside of here people want a better retirement with more benefits and a COLA that is actually connected to the goods and services used by retirees. Not looking to get ahead in retirement but dont want to be losing ground every year to inflation.

Everyone wants more, but doesnt want to pay for it. Somehow, just like all the other conspiracy tales, the false narrative that if you tax the 1% you can pay for it all, continues.

Thats not how it works. How it works is they are going to have to tax your daughter and son and grandkids more to pay for you! They are going to have to tax your caregiver and that 'good' CNA more to pay for you.

Thats the way it has always been, thats the way it is going to be. But you are going to believe otherwise so yeah, let them write articles, nobody reads the papers anyway.
