House Ways and Means Republicans are inviting the new Social Security Commissioner to testify before the Committee -- apparently the whole Committee. This is normal when a new Commissioner comes into office.
Note that I said it was the Republicans issuing the invitation. You would think that in normal times the invitation would come from the entire Committee, rather than just the majority party. Will such "normal" times ever return?

Inviting? Isn’t Bisignano obligated to go since he works for the taxpayers?
However, in a May 6 letter, Republican representatives led by New York Rep. Nicole Malliotakis urged newly confirmed Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano to use caution in making sure any changes to the Social Security Administration would not lead to a disruption of benefits to older adults and people with disabilities.
In a separate letter from the Ways and Means Committee, also dated May 6, representatives invited Bisgnano to appear before the committee to outline his plans to “ensure the SSA provides secure, accurate and timely service to all Americans.”
“We’re just making it clear we cannot have any disruptions to Social Security that recipients receive. We need to make sure the agency is properly staffed with accessibility to local offices and get any concerns addressed,” Malliotakis told MarketWatch.
“This has been going on for years — long wait times when seniors or people with disabilities call the 800 number. We often have to intervene on behalf of our constituents, and people should not have to go to their members of Congress to get service from Social Security,” Malliotakis said. “This has been ongoing for years — it’s not a sudden issue.”
“We need to make sure that the record is set
It really says something that this letter came from a group of Republican lawmakers,” the Senior Citizens League said in an emailed statement. “It shows that concerns about the Social Security Administration go beyond politics. Social Security matters to everyone, regardless of party, and we should all be paying attention to any changes at the agency. At the same time, we recognize that cost-saving measures can be necessary, but they must be balanced with protecting the services and benefits that millions of Americans rely on every day.”
