Here are the job duties for the position of Chief of Disability Adjudication currently being advertised by Social Security:
The Chief of Disability Adjudication (DA) oversees an organization responsible for providing the basic framework and mechanisms through which individuals and organizations file for disability under Titles II, VIII, and XVI of the Social Security Act as amended, which includes initial applications and reconsideration requests whose decisions are rendered by the State Disability Determination Services (DDS). DA also provides the basic framework and mechanisms through which individuals and organizations who are dissatisfied with determinations affecting their rights to and amounts of benefits, or their participation in benefit Programs administered by the Agency under the Social Security Act, including initial disability determinations made by State agencies when requested by the claimant, may administratively appeal such determinations in accordance with the requirements of the Administrative Procedure and Social Security Acts.
The Chief is responsible for the following:
- Managing reviews and disability decisions on applications for disability under title II and title XVI on initial applications and reconsideration requests.
- Managing and administering the nationwide hearings process of SSA.
- Managing the Appeals Council (the final level of administrative review under the Administrative Procedure Act for claims filed under titles II, VIII, and XVI of the Social Security Act).
- Developing and implementing comprehensive workload management strategies for initial and reconsideration claims, hearings, and appeals filed under the Social Security Act.
- Managing employee services, performance management, and labor management and employee relations activities for DA nationwide.

I saw that original title Charles, LOL
What happened to the sycophant lackey Jay Ortis?
Are they just moving Jay Ortis from Acting to permanent?
Trump admin ready to go on an ALJ hiring spree. New rules coming so many new decisions will be out soon. I predict they will RTO ALJs to make room for new ones who are committed.
Appears the position is being filled as competitive SES and not filled non-competitively by the White House, so that's pretty likely.
No hiring spree or otherwise... predictions are only that... Nagle appears to be done, hence the Administration can advertise to fill the position of Chief ALJ. Ortis would certainly appear to be the obvious choice.
Line ALJ here, don’t know the guy but I feel like Ortiz has done a pretty good job in difficult circumstances.
I am not reading this as a permanent CALJ or even DCOSS of ODA. This looks more like a new position and office overseeing disability adjudication from initial level through Appeals Council, smushing those functions into a single office.
Agree with 12:41 . It calls for a different, skillset than simple chief ALJ. Not that Ortis might not have the inside track if he has developed a good working relationship with Bisignano. But there is a big difference between managing OHO alone versus being ultimately responsible for all of the DDS’s and the appeals council as well. It makes sense to organize it vertically like that, since all those components are working on the very same cases. But it might require significantly more executive skills than is needed for Chief ALJ..Tech kniwledge/experience at the enterprise level would be helpful as well.
This is the answer. Frank renamed everyone "chiefs" because he's such a great businessman. Unclear if the CALJ position or OCALJ office even still exist, no one has seen a organization chart of Frank's newest reorganization. It's all been announced only by word of mouth.
This position has nothing to do with the chief ALJ position. This job posting is for the head of the office of disability adjudication. It’s what used to be the deputy commissioner position. The new commissioner now calls them chief.
Whatever happened to Nagle? Here one day gone the next. Did he get taken by the rapture?
