Tracking Immigration Judges

The Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University is using Freedom of Information Act requests to track various government functions, including Immigration Judges decisions. You have to wonder how long it will be before they start tracking Social Security Administrative Law Judges (ALJs) in the same way.

Where does privacy come into this? ALJs are government employees and are paid with my tax dollars.

How much review does SSA do of the job performance of ALJs. I bet ALJs aren't under the Micky Mouse 1-3-5 rating system that other SSA employees are under.

When was the last time a ALJ was removed for not producing what other SSA employees are being ask to do "fair share of the work?"

Never. Ever. ALJs can't be placed under a performance measurement system under current law. The agency tried removing a couple of low producing ALJs in the early 1980s, but couldn't provide any documentation/evidence to support their contention that 10-20 decisions a month was inadequate and reason sufficient for removal.

If that's the case, I would bet money that more ALJs aren't needed, just need to make the ones working now pull their weight.

As a government employee this is the kind of thing that really ticks me. ALJs make good money and there is no control over what they are doing and hearing requests are backed up through the roof, but if you are a lower grade peon you have a supervisor looking at every move you make.

ODAR ALJs are lazy misfits.

HALLEX governs ODAR and especially ALJ's. While there are definitely ALJ's who do not do their work, the vast majority DO NOT FOLLOW HALLEX therby creating more work for everyone. The problem lies not with "lazy ALJ's", the problem lies with lazy, inept, incompetent and irresponsible MANAGEMENT. You can't fix a problem when the fix is right in front of you yet you keep pointing fingers at everyone else. If everyone would just do their job, there would be nothing to "fix" and cases would be moved.
