With budget talks deadlocked, House Republicans readied a week-long bill to cut spending by as much as $12 billion while averting a government shutdown threatened for Friday, officials disclosed Monday night.The measure also would include enough money to operate the Defense Department through the Sept. 30 end of the fiscal year, the officials added.
They said House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, told the rank and file in a closed-door meeting he would seek passage of the bill if it became clear it was necessary to avoid shutting the government down.

The fiscal year 2011 was supposed to have been passed before October 1, 2010. This was before the November election, when the Democratic party held the house, senate, and executive office. Failure to pass a budget now should not be blamed on the Republican¬s, since it should have been taken care of already. Budget discussion¬s taking place now should be about FY2012. All problems associated with failure to pass a 2011 budget should fall entirely on the Democrats, they alone are to blame. Getting a budget passed was the only task required of them and they couldn't get it done.
What dream world are you living in 5:14? Congress hasn't passed a budget for many many years by Sept 30 of any year! It doesn't matter whether the R's or D's are "in charge." Which is a misnomer anyway. The R's vote in lockstep but the D's do not. Therefore, you cannot assume that D's will necessarily vote a certain way on every vote. They all are at fault but it is only the R's and the tea drinkers that I hear say "shut it down." Which is totally irresponsible!
The defense budget is high due to money flow in wars in Pakistan , Afganistan and other gulf countries.
