Republicans are not currently proposing to privatize Social Security but it appears that they are set to propose what amounts to privatizing Medicare, converting it to a program where those eligible for Medicare would receive a voucher which they could use to buy private medical insurance -- if such insurance is available and if they can afford it

My understanding is that it would not be a voucher based system, but rather the senior would choose from a number of private plans and the monies would be paid directly to the insurance company. The process would be like that for federal employees and members of Congress.
Privatize is their way of saying get rid of. Just like they want to "privatize" Social Security. Hopefully the voters will have the opportunity to really decide and private industry is not the way to go. That is why Social Security and Medicare were created in the first place.
@anonymous1 - and how many insurance companies do you know that are willing to insure 65+-year-old or disabled people with all sort of pre-existing conditions at a reasonable rate?
@anonymous3 - Aren't federal employees covered regardless of pre-existing conditions, etc? They get to choose from a list of plans and pay the same premiums as any other employee that chooses the same plan. Wouldn't that be the same way under the proposal?
