So are the many people who retired earlier than they responded they felt they would/would be able to do so doing ok in retirement? It seems like there's a third question involving their pre-retirement predictions vs. what happened in retirement would be really enlightening.

agreed with @12:34 above. This chart would appear to support the conclusion that people were better off than they thought they would be and were able to retire early.

It is really interesting how the retirement age has changed over the years. I'm surprised that so many more people retired before their 60's than expected. I wonder if the other comments are correct in thinking that theses people retired early because they felt comfortable. Maybe future changes in social security laws would make the numbers on these polls closer to how they answered on the first half.

I wonder how many retired early because of illness/injuries and never thought of applying for disability because they thought it didn't apply to them. I'd place my father in the latter category. Had I known then what I know now about Social Security disability, I'd have encouraged him to file (I was just out of law school at that point and didn't get into disability law until years after). He stopped working because of physical problems that prevented him from working, but thought he'd saved enough money to get by. Then he experienced the housing bubble and stock market crashes that have made the money he saved all but disappear.
