An Oregon man has been arrested after threatening to shoot up a Social Security office. This was not the first time he had made such threats. Here's what happened at the Administrative Law Judge hearing on his case:
At the July hearing, he yelled at his attorney and an administrative judge and threatened future physical violence, the complaint says. Salem police responded and Carlsen was allowed to leave without arrest after he was escorted out of the hearing room. Carlsen live-streamed his actions, according to prosecutors.

I can totally relate to how this guy feels. However, if he did kill several people, I don't think it would change ANYTHING. SSA would still screw as many as they can...
Is it SUPPOSED TO change anything, Tim? Are threats of violence or death supposed to change how a judge decides? What an inane comment you just made. You probably shouldn't have access to weapons either!
This has all the earmarks of a person that is exaggerating severity and making a scene to get benefits.
Under SSA's last best offer for the new ALJ contract, management would no longer have to notify law enforcement if an ALJ's life was threatened by a claimant. So expect many, many more of these types of articles.

"The ability to get along with coworkers or peers without (unduly) distracting them or exhibiting behavioral extremes"

Somebody with that degree of lack of self control and judgment would not last long in any job. If it is due to a long-term, documented medically determinable impairment, he will likely meet the disability standard as per the above rule. Not that he will be able to collect while in jail.

What part gave it away?
Was it the part where he never attributed (at least not to SSA) his threats to his conditions?
Was it the part where he didn't even notify SSA of his threats?
Yeah, those sound like earmarks of a person exaggerating.

Under that logic, attending a hearing and alleging mental illness is evidence of exaggeration.
I used to do a lot of hearings in Oregon. Beautiful place and usually pretty good ALJs.
But this reminded me of a dust up I heard about around 2010 in Portland, OR. A lawyer got into an altercation w/ ALJ Dan Hyatt in an elevator on who would ride down first. https://www.oregonlive.com/portland/2010/06/portland_elevator_tussle_clima.html
Never forget this has happened before in 2010 in Las Vegas. Here was the synopsis:
"The Las Vegas courthouse shooting was an attack on January 4, 2010, in which a gunman opened fire in the lobby of the Lloyd D. George Federal District Courthouse in Las Vegas, Nevada. Two people were killed in the attack, including the gunman, who was identified by authorities as Johnny Lee Wicks, a 66-year-old man disgruntled over cuts to his Social Security benefits.[1][2][3][4] Stanley W. Cooper, a 72-year-old court security officer, was also killed after a shotgun blast struck him in the chest. A 48-year-old deputy U.S. Marshal named Richard Gardner was shot in the upper arm, chest, and head, with a total of eight pieces of buckshot entering his body, and hospitalized at the University Medical Center, but survived."
I used to go there a lot and kind of knew Stanley Cooper before he was killed. And this shooter was so dumb. He was already on SSI. He apparently was just mad Nevada cut the supplement to SSI in 2010. No ALJ had any control over this. It was just tragic this security guard died over this nonsense.
This can escalate quick.
