This appears to be part of a larger Biden Administration effort to ease the lives of transgender Americans.
Why should Social Security even bother to collect gender information? Prohibitions on same sex marriage used to affect benefits payments but that was external to Social Security and those prohibitions are now gone. Social Security benefit payments themselves have been gender neutral for many decades.

Maybe, although I suspect those lists' data is generated on an annual basis, so unless SSA is going to go back and correct them after publication, I don't see it changing.

I attribute it to propaganda being used to attack civil/labor/gender rights generally. Nobody should care about other peoples' genitals, but they do when they are told to care by people who really just want to end labor rights, cut taxes, and solidify a voter base to maintain these policies.
Some people are born in the wrong body. A boy inside, can look like a girl on the outside, and a girl inside, looks like a boy on the outside. They either go gender neutral, or take on the appearance of what is INSIDE...as thats what counts...not whats in ones nether-regions. "Woke", no. Human understanding? Yes.
You cannot choose your sex, you can choose your gender.
The sex is important data but is not posted publicly so no one but employees will ever see it. So what is the point?
A similar change was done to the child relationship screen a few years ago. Again, none of that info is published to the beneficiary so they never see it yet we wasted a couple million dollars making the change, for what?

@12:09: You could not be more right. @6:07...The POINT is human dignity and feeling safe in how they are inside. Acceptance. They may not SEE it physically, but that's not what matters, what matters is compassion towards others and their struggles. That will always be more important than money.
