This agency has no money to hire new employees but somehow found 192 million to build and design a 300,000 square foot computer center. Why couldn't SSA have used foreclosed properties that the taxpayers already own. I understand that this computer center is need but I am worried about the cost to the taxpayer.

Maybe it means stuff like this won't happen http://www.cringely.com/2012/03/the-30-billion-hack/#comment-204337

You can't just take some random foreclosed properties and convert them into an enterprise class data center...industry specs for these type of things are very specific as to what meets or doesn't meet code...

And this money was previously approved by congress and comes from a different bucket than payroll costs. Plus the existing data center is quickly becoming maxed from a facilities standpoint.

I get tired oh hearing the phrase of being previously approved but somehow congress does not have the authority to hire more employees. Everything is paid by the taxpayers and different "buckets" do not exist. I wonder if the previous post went to the Enron School of Finance.

Congress tells SSA what money it can spend and where it spends it. Congress does not have any say about "authority" to do anything when it comes to agency staffing. You want to see where this bucket is? Try that giant nine-figure line item about technology/data centers in SSA's budget.

??? "Congress does not have any say about 'authority' to do anything when it comes to agency staffing." ???

Who is kidding who? Congress does not take on the responsibility, might be closer to the truth.
If the Congress gives a specific line item for increase SSA staffing, the Commissioner of SS [OPM] not spend the money and return it at the end of the fiscal year?
If the right Congressional leaders tell the Commissioner that there is money in his/her budget and to use it for staffing -- will his/her response be any thing but "... how high?"
