Congressional Hearing Scheduled

The House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee in conjunction with the House Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee has scheduled a hearing for May 8 on tax fraud involving identity theft. Social Security's Death Master file is the agency's connection to this.

Looked on the Social Security website the other day for a client whose Social Security number was being used by someone else. It simply referred you to the FTC website. The rest of the page dealt with reporting someone getting benefits whom you believed shouldn't.

Responding to anonymous: I don't know what you expect SSA to do. SSA has OIG, but OIG mainly takes cases involving large cases of fraud, waste, and abuse of SSA programs. OIG does not have the resources to respond to every identity theft allegation or situation. Try contacting local law enforcement.
