Hearing On Puerto Rico Fraud Allegations

The House Social Security Subcommittee has scheduled a hearing for 2:30 on September 19 concerning the recent allegations of a number of fraudulent Social Security disability claims in Puerto Rico. The hearing notice says that employees involved in adjudicating disability claims noticed that they were receiving nearly identical medical reports on different claimants. The allegation is that the physicians involved were receiving $150 to $500 per fraudulent report. If that's true, all I can say is dumb, dumb, dumb. How stupid did they think Social Security is? Why would any physician with good sense risk serious criminal charges for such a small amount of money? Dumb, dumb, dumb. I'll bet that most of the claimants involved could have been approved based upon honest medical evidence. I've seen that sort of claimant. There aren't that many of them out there but they exist. It was once said of boxing promoter Don King that "... he would rather put a dishonest quarter into his pocket than an honest dollar." That's the mentality that some people have.

And to think that for years someone has been stating that fraud is non-existant or so slight that it was inconsequential.. Interesting, hmmmmmmm..

charles, you need to get checked out if you seriously believe those that paid for this service would have been paid anyway.

oh wait, puerto rico consistently has statistically significant higher pay rates than any other area odar serves. maybe you're right, but not because the folks were actually disabled...

so you have the obviously dumb doctors doing this, fine. the bigger problem is we have plenty of smarter doctors who can tailor their reports however they like in order to get their patients benefits. how do we stop them?

Just look at the GRIDS - little education, claim you can't communicate in English, and your back hurts / you don't like to be in crowds. Cha-ching!

@ 8:29pm, So anyone who complains 'that the persons back hurts' is faking? Me I'd say if they have something go along with that, that I'd give them the benefit of the doubt, weight that's off center can pull on the spine which can cause pain. If I stand long enough My back bothers Me enough to make Me bend over double after standing up for more than 5 or so minutes(that's a guess as I've never timed how long that actually takes), but then are you an MD? Unless one has proof to the contrary that one is lying about that, then it would be unfair to not believe them.

Fear of crowds has nothing to do with the GRID, nor does back pain. I think you're confusing the GRID with SSR 96-8p.
