Statistics can be manipulated very easily. The 800 number is telling the public to go to the internet and apply for benefits online which is not an easy task to do. The reason for this internet push is that many office appointment slots are booked up. for months. These 800 SSA employees are being timed but brevity is not a form of wisdom. The agency is only kicking the can down the road and frustrating many applicants to their benefits. Once you apply online one does not get a direct contact number to the employee working your case but rather the generic 1-800-772 1213 toll free number.
Beyond the pressure from top to bottom to reduce call times (even if that means half-assing the contact) since the Commissioner hath decreed that wait times shalt come down, this is a meaningless statistic unless viewed alongside the busy rate.
Let’s not forget they have listed local #s for offices in effort to help the 800#. They need to show this chart next to field office answer rates - I suspect it would be the exact opposite
