Why is Biden taking so long? Possible pocket veto?

Wouldn’t a pocket veto go into effect midnight tonight at the close of the current term of Congress?

Biden has 10 days from his receipt of the bill (12/27/2024, excluding Sundays), so he has until 01/08/2025 to put his Herbie Hancock on the bill. If he fails to sign it by the 8th, it would then be considered a pocket veto.

As stupid and reckless as the bill is, he will sign it.

It appears he still gets his 10-days. “As to the President's opportunity for consideration, we have held that he may still approve bills and that they will become laws, if he acts within the time allotted for that purpose, although Congress meanwhile has adjourned.

The bill's passage is "a monumental victory for millions of public service workers who have been denied the full benefits they've rightfully earned," said Shannon Benton, executive director for the Senior Citizens League, which advocates for retirees and which has long pushed for the expansion of Social Security benefits. "This legislation finally restores fairness to the system and ensures the hard work of teachers, first responders and countless public employees is truly recognized."

The White House did not respond to requests for comment.

I still find it strange this was a quiet bipartisan bill. Maybe its a reflection of the average age of Congress.

Monumental victory for who? Privatization Social Security advocates?

I think a better argument can be made for doing away with WEP vs GPO. I think both are fair but would rather see people get their full PIA even though they get a non covered pension than spouses or widows getting a full aux or survivor benefit whole drawing a large government pension. Why not just not count the first $1000 or so when determining WEP or GPO?
