Sticking Your Foot In It

Alan Simpson, the co-chair of the President's Deficit Reduction Commission, recently made some strong comments about Social Security to a representative of Social Security Works who made the recording public. How bad were Simpson's comments? So bad that The Fiscal Times, which was set up by uber-deficit hawk Peter Peterson, a long time advocate for Social Security cuts, called the comments "condescending and derisive" and "wildly wrong."

This is why these commmissions are always a bad idea. Someone always has an agenda, and nothing real is ever accomplished. All because those responsible for making the necessary decisions are gutless, spineless cowards.

Sounds like The Fiscal Times are trying to sweep this back under the rug. What they find "wrong" here is not the content of his comments, but the fact that he told the truth about what the commission plans to do.

It is certainly interesting that Pete Peterson's publication criticized Simpson's appalling remark. Peterson's view is pretty much the same as Simpson's, for pretty much the same reasons. No Saj is right--Simpson said out loud in public what members of the Commission say in private. And, for a change, his remarks made the news. People have been saying this for years and no one much cared. I'm glad Simpson made a stir. Maybe Congress will realize what the Commission is up to and take better notice of their activities.
