I think an additional question needs to be asked of those saying they would like to increase the COLA - What other program needs to be reduced to pay for this? Persoanlly I would love to see COLAs increased, but paying for everything has to be a discussion that takes place. look at all of the redundancy in the govt at start there. it may be small dollar amounts, but even small things add up over time.
A strong majority believes that Social Security payments should be increased, not decreased, and they are willing to pay for the increases in higher payroll taxes. Yet all we hear about from most politicians and the media is about the need to cut benefits.
New poll shows people would rather get more money than less money from the government?? Really?? I'm shocked!!
Polls can be twisted by how questions are asked.
Grandpa Simpson says, "I'm old. Gimme, Gimme, Gimme."
"Greedy Geazer Syndrome" We now attack the old for taking the benefits they planned on for decades. The problem started when business found ways to not pay pensions. Citizens had the game changed in the middle. 401K is the way, company pays a triffle and you make up the rest. Are you 100% versed in choosing the best investments offered by your 401K provider? Do you understand, monitor and ajust as market conditions change? Its your job to do that now, completely. Dont worry, I will offer a service that will only charge 10% of whats in the 401K, its business.
Changing the COLA is absurd, unless you link it to the goods and services that seniors use. Doctors, medications, utilities and food as starters. But if you did that, you would have to pay more in COLA. Saying that seniors can change to other things when the price gets too high does not work. "Sorry doc, that angioplasty is too expensive, can we just go with the flu shot instead?" "Mr. Grocer, I see the price of bread and milk are up, do you have any sales on toilet paper I can buy instead?"
