Man Arrested For Threatening Ann Arbor Office
From a
WDIV in Detroit:
Federal
investigators say Daniel Norton is a dangerous man who may have been
planning a mass murder and escape into the wilderness.
The
Ypsilanti man was out on bond for making violent threats against
workers at an Ann Arbor Social Security office. Then, on Wednesday,
Homeland Protective Services looked in the trunk of his car and found an
arsenal of weapons similar to an AR-15 assault rifle, body armor,
ammunition, a generator and meals ready to eat like the ones used by the
military....
Norton allegedly called into the Ann Arbor office saying if he did not
receive benefits for heart medicine he would have a tactical response.
He faxed the office an extensive litany of alleged expert certificates
in weaponry and combat. ...

Shouldn't this guy get benefits based upon his mental functioning??
conversely, his ability to plan out an attack and subsequent escape indicate an ability that is significantly higher than what would be expected of a "disabled" individual that could not perform ANY job.
Are we really joking about this situation? Would this same jokes or comments be made if the law enforcement agency hadn't stopped this gentleman and 20+ employees and many other members of the public been injured or killed?
Are we joking about this situation? Yes.
Would we be if people had been killed? No.
I'm a civil libertarian guy, but if you fax a list of weapon experties to SSA, I've got no problem with your trunk getting popped.
Why is this guy out on bond?
Well it's a good thing our office has security measures in place to deal with...oh, wait, that's right, we don't have anything in place regarding security except the guard at the desk doing the daily crossword. No metal detectors, bullet proof glass - nothing.
Once somebody with a plan like this guy actually executes it, then we'll get those security measures. Too bad it going to take someone losing their life to address a potential problem.
Nah, we're okay, we bought 174,000 rounds of hollow point ammo this year, so I guess I am the only unarmed guy in the Agency..
