The New York Times has been reporting on troubles at the Railroad Retirement Board, (RRB) which, unlike Social Security, has been approving a very high percentage of disability claims. Today's New York Times article on the situation reports that the Inspector General At RRB has been proposing that the Social Security Administration assume some of RRB's duties.

I personally have 2 times in 20 years worked on agency task forces aimed at how we would transition/absorb or whatever the term would be the duties of the RRB if they were abolished or absorbed by SSA. Each time it obviously didn't happen.
Maybe this time something would occur? Don't hold your breath.
It's not a great idea for SSA to take on even more work when they can't process the claims they already have in a timely manner.
Assuming SSA received the RRB staffing in addition to the workload, it makes sense. SSA could operate the RRB program far more economically, eliminating the entire RRB field structure that in not necessary.
