Social Security brought charges before the Merit Systems Protection Board (MSRB) seeking the removal of London Steverson, an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ). An ALJ working for MSRB issued an initial decision that suspended Steverson from his job for 35 days. Social Security appealed. The MSRB has now decided to remove Steverson from his job altogether.
Steverson had been charged with improperly using agency letterhead for personal purposes, storing sexually oriented material on a government computer, using a government computer for a personal business, giving misleading and incomplete responses when questioned about some of the charges and using the agency's address and mail for personal correspondence. The MSRB sustained all charges against Steverson.

I wonder who had nerve enough to go after this ALJ? I heard stories about various ALJ's who performed poorly or just didn't perform at all, didn't come to work or yelled at staff, but this guy really let it all hang out. Porn at work? That's really kinda nuts. Dare I ask how old he was? This is juvenile stuff. Makes you wonder what else he was up to. NO
Full and fair hearings?.Huh.But this is the type of trash that represent social security.

I read some of wikipedia.It's a shame.I suspect ssa have very few african americans.But if credible evidence support the charges then correct action may have been take.

After reading his wikpedia entry, the guy is definitely a liar. ALJs are appointed by the Commissioner of Social Security, not the President. The only reason someone who claim that is to make the uninitated think he's an Article III judge. How embarassing.
The removal of this employee was remarkable. This man's CV says "hired for life." How strange that after such a remarkable career he veered off course. And, as the MSPB's decision showed, his actions were clearly well beyond any acceptable bounds.
Why did SSA wait 5 years? How long can they wait?
The incidents on which the proposed removal was based took place over at least 5 years, according to the MSPB's decision at the link shown in Charles T's item. But, it does not appear that the Chief HO ALJ in Region IX (the San Franciso Region)actually worked on this case for five years.
I speculate that after becoming aware of one incident, supervisors reviewed available files and computer records to determine the extent of the problem conduct in question. And, came up with a whole lot of stuff they had previously been unaware of. I am surprised that MSPB decided to remove this employee based on my experience of other decisions to retain employees with long histories of egregious misconduct.
However, this man was conducting his own business on the company clock and using government computer equipment in the process. This, together with the sexually explicit material stored on the hard drive, amounts to the third rail of misconduct. He should have kept it at home. No great loss, from SSA's standpoint, despite a previously distinguished career.
