The Associated Press is reporting that 3,900 of the $250 economic stimulus checks sent to Social Security and SSI recipients went to prisoners. About 2,200 of the inmates were entitled to the checks because they had only entered prison recently. The other 1,700 were sent checks by mistake.
This information comes from Social Security's Inspector General, but the underlying report has not yet been released. Apparently, the Boston Herald got the story first. The Inspector General seemed to be leaking stories like this to the Washington Times in the past.

This is such a non-news item. There are over seven million people receiving SSI payments, totalling in the tens of billions of dollars, and at least 25 percent of them are being paid incorrectly at any given time due to the lack of staff in the field offices. So the media trumpets a one-time erroneous payment of $ 250.00 to fewer than two thousand people. Gee, why does the American press suck.
Why? Because they don't know and don't care that what they publish is garbage! Great work, Boston Herald! Keeping America misinformed for a buck a copy.
I saw an article that some of these checks were issued to guys who have been in prison for a long time before SSA had specific suspense coding so that a computer run could not determine that they were incarcerated.
