COLA Announcement Delayed Due To Government Shutdown

Because of the government shutdown, Social Security will be forced to delay an announcement of the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for this year.

Obama had better come to his senses and negotiate with the Republicans to re-open the government.

the only people who need to negotiate are in congress. i love how passing a law is suddenly the president's obligation and fault, when before you right-wing types were always crowing about how he was unduly meddling by getting involved in the legislative process.

how's about you tell your (r) elected friends to allow a vote on a CR that continues the status quo which, by the way, funds the government at Paul Ryan's Budget circa 2012 levels (a concession by dems and victory for repubs in and of itself) and then negotiate on dismantling our entitlements as O has said repeatedly he's more than willing to do?

I so agree with you.

YES, LET'S BE SURE AND TRUST OUR JERK IN CHIEF. HE HAS NEVER LIED BEFORE, WHY WOULDN'T HE NEGOTIATE AFTER HE HAS NO REASON TOO, DUHHHH???

Wow it looks like the Tea Party trolls have discovered this blog. Please keep the amusing nonsense comments coming guys.

you people are a joke innocent people are suffering because of yall

The Tea Party is made up of rich mostly white people who dont care about the average American. Vote them OUT! in 2014. No chance Cantor, as Bachman will go to trial. Fox news is entertainment, even Murdoch admitted that. Glenn Beck is a joke. Do your homework on this group.

great, so people that are not working are getting another raise, while federal workers get NO pay and haven't had a COLA since 2010. Remind me again exactly who is living on a "fixed income".

It always amazes me that when some people want to argue, they don't throw out any facts and simply cast insults and disparaging remarks and expect other people to take their side of the argument seriously. "So people that are not working are getting another raise?" What does that mean, exactly? "Jerk in Chief..." really? Followed by a DUHHH. If you want to argue, please use coherent sentences and well thought out ideas. People on the fence about issues (you can't change everyone's minds, especially not extremists) will have a better grasp of your points and likely share many of them. Just some friendly advice.

Since healthcare is related to disability i'll make this comment. If republicans could defund, dismantle, destroy the aca, what would they replace it with? It seems they only care about people paying a penaly, what about those that need healthcare insurance? Mr obama has negociated enough,no more negociation on aca. I'm a beneficiary but this shutdown nonsense goes deeper than cola.

The whole thing about aca is taxes and increasing the size and amount of money the government has access to. They should have expanded medicare and medicaid to cover the uninsured instead of trying to socialize all of medicine. so you really want the IRS involved in your life in another area? If you have ever had a problem with the IRS, you know how user friendly they are..

@8:58 That's a great comment. While ACA was in the legislative process republicans kept saying healthcare is broken, but it needs to be fixed another way. They never had any specific ideas, just kept saying ACA was the wrong way to do things.

Unless healthcare became broken the minute Obama was sworn in, why did the republicans not fix it with their brilliant ideas when they controlled the house, senate, and presidency?

While aca was in teh legislative process, the republicans did not have anything to do with it. It was ram rodded through by a Dem Congress, Senate and Pres. Remember, Pelosi sign of brillance, "We must pass the bill to see what's in it."

Obummer is destroying the country. Reid and Pelosi used trickery and chicanery to ram the ACA down the throat of the body politic. The Dems lost the House in 2012 because of public dissatisfaction with ObamaCare. Ergo, Obummer should negotiate with the House on ObummerCare.

Not suprisingly, the ad-hominem attacks ("jerk in chief), the ALL CAPS rants, the use of sophomoric nomenclature (obummer), misspellings, stale Fox News tropes (rammed the ACA down the throats)are all coming from one side of the "debate." (And I use that term loosely).

Obama has worked hard to destroy the middle class, and has succeeded in increasing poverty, dependence on government, and unemployment and reducing work hours and full time jobs for many still fortunate to have jobs. He stole money from Medicare and gave it to Obama care and now will attack social security. Entitlement reform is a take away from those who paid social security and Medicare taxes, and does not address money and benefits given to needs based programs. The continued outcome is a smaller middle class paying the increasing bills of the growing numbers of poor.

Unfortunately, that sounds about right.

The ACA itself was a compromise. Where is the "great harm" being inflicted on the American people by this act?

We should have Universal coverage from cradle to grave. Where is the public good in the billions of dollars in bonuses to Insurance co CEO's, hospital CEO's, the heads of big pharma?

I am so tired of lies about abuse of the system. Sure, there are exceptions, but not anywhere near on the scale alleged. The definition of disabled under SSA has a very special and limited meaning, yet every knucklehead (Sen. Coburn)that rips the program or it's recipients fails to note the correct definition.

Let's say there is a case of real fraud...do we judge all claimants to be just others jumping on that bandwagon? Should all ALJs be lumped in with the behavior of the Huntington ALJs? Should all CRs be lumped in with the criminals selling SSNs or committing fraud wit their timesheets? Should all reps be viewed as just another "Eric Conn" artist?
