OHO Office Closing

The Social Security hearing office in White Plains, NY is closing. That's unusual. I can't remember when I've heard of an Office of Hearings Operations office closing.

Through the grapevine, I've been told they had a really bad water intrusion problem that would have been very expensive to remedy. No idea if that played a role, but food for though.

Not choosing a new location is a bit concerning, though.

GSA is ending every lease, 1300+ of those are SSA offices.

President Trump said many times that Social Security won’t be touched. I guess one can’t trust a convicted felon these days.

Did the administration’s directive to the General Services Administration to revoke all leases for federal offices nationwide have an impact on SSA’s decision to close the White Plains hearing office?” she asked. “Does the administration have plans to close ADDITIONAL SSA offices?”

I'm not able to get past the paywall for that article, but I did find some information about the closure on govexec.

The article on Gov't Exec states that there was no "successor" office and all employees will be given a chance to relocate in the tri state area.

I'm guessing a successor office would absorb all cases and all employees. Since none exists, they will transfer their workload to other offices. Employees won't be offered relo. Not in this environment. You'll be offered a chance to relocate within their region and if you turn down their offer, you likely won't be eligible for unemployment. The pain continues.

it is more remarkable that no (or very few) offices have been closed/consolidated over the years despite the fact that receipts for OHO are less than 50% of what they were at their peak and approx 30% down from the average for the 15 years preceding the pandemic.

I think we would be better off if we limited our suspicions and objections to those actions which are actually illegal and undermine the rule of law. That should keep us plenty busy. When we object or find suspicious things that just make plain sense we lose credibility and lessen the impact of objections to the really important principles that are being (or almost certainly will be) violated. There’s a big difference between complaining about decisions that make our employment less convenient versus policies that facilitate authoritarianism.

DOGE doing a great job closing offices. I appreciate it as a taxpayer.

Specifically, since 2010, SSA’s customer service budget has fallen 17 percent (adjusted for inflation) and staffing at SSA is at a 25-year low. Despite this and despite pleas from Democrats in the House and Senate, Republicans have resisted increases to SSA’s operational budget, and have in fact, suggested cuts.”

The photo of the SSA office in that article is NOT the White Plains hearing office, which is in a suite inside a private office building.

SSA's Regional Communications office for the NY region released a "Dear Colleague" letter a a couple of weeks ago that states the White Plains lease expires on 5/31/25 and the lessor informed SSA that it does not intend to extend the lease. The cases are being divided up between the OHOs in Albany, Bronx, both Manhattan locations, Jamaica and New Haven, CT.

A convicted felon? Really? If you had half a brain you would know that that was all a political stunt, and no-one else would have been taken to court with something like that. He will touch SS, but only to strengthen it. He said as much. Try to keep up!

You will regret this in the future . FAAFO

I recall an OHO getting shutdown for a few weeks to fumigate for bedbugs back in the early 2000s.

And Trump never cheated on his wives and never lied about that; Obama wasn't born in the U.S.; Trump University is a great school (sorry - "was"); the Trump charity wasn't closed down for corruption; Trump never verbally or physically assaulted a woman; Trump never lied about the size of the crowd at the 2017 inauguration; Trump never lied about the 2020 election; Mexico paid for the wall. . . .
