Former Social Security Commissioner Michael Astrue appeared on NPR this morning to talk about the struggles that the agency faces at the moment. He said “They don’t understand” a lot. By the way, Astrue had to go to his local Security Security field office recently.

Say what you want, but Astrue was a great CoSS. Yes, he ruled with an iron fist but he made the trains run in time and shit got done. No, you could not use the word “impact” in a sentence where people were the object, and he fired people over the phone, but he was effective.
He also waited in line in the cafeteria like everyone else and refused special treatment. He often would randomly just sit down with your average worker bee during lunch and have open discussions with them about their job and the Agency.
I’ve been with the agency over 20 years, and I feel the Agency did amazingly well during his tenure. There was a sense of purpose and pride.
It all started going downhill after he left.
I didn't "have" to go an office. I go once in a while a little bit before opening with homemade donuts for the team.
I didn't fire that many people, but those I did fire always got to look me in the eye.
Best wishes, MJA
