Elon Musk Rummaging Through Social Security Databases

The Speaker of the House of Representatives speaking of Elon Musk on Face The Press today:

We meet late into the night in his office and we've looked at that. What he's finding with his algorithms crawling through the data of Social Security system is enormous amounts of fraud, waste, and abuse.

A couple of thoughts: Are he and his crew authorized to do this and when will we get to find out about all this fraud, waste and abuse? Also, he’s not keeping a copy of this data, is he?

I handled program integrity issues in my office for over 30 years. I know for an absolute fact they are reciting these lies because they want to do away with Social Security and Medicare.

The picture you posted makes me wonder how many doses of Ketamine he just took.

Here is how you know Congress will not save us. I know for a fact DOGE has been shown SSA data and ssa Death Data and an explanation of why they are wrong. And do you think there is a single correction coming? No, they are doubling down. The GOP isn’t beholden to the people or to their duties or constitution. Only the president. And the only light at the end of the tunnel is now I firmly believe they will get crushed in the midterms. It’s been a month and look at how people are turning. For the sake of the people I serve everyday, I hope just isn’t too late.

If anyone is truly interested in the causes behind SSA improper payments, I highly encourage you to check out the Paymentaccuracy.gov website. Per the Payment Integrity Information Act, federal agencies must report program integrity information on a scheduled basis. We at SSA have components dedicated to evaluating the agency’s improper payments. If any of DOGE would take the time to actually ask for feedback or do an ounce of research they would quickly find that the overwhelming majority of improper payments are OUTSIDE OF THE AGENCY’S CONTROL - meaning SSA may not have access to the information needed to properly adjust the benefit amount. Changes in income, resources, living arrangement, etc. can all affect payments and we must rely heavily on the beneficiary to report these changes. https://www.paymentaccuracy.gov/payment-accuracy-the-numbers/

Did he go through a 7 month long suitability that required foreign contacts, all contacts for everyone in immediately family (including his baby mommas), mortgage docs, disclosure of any federal loans, criminal history and credit check? Doubt it. If he didn't then they are violating SSA's PII laws. Furthermore, he wouldn't know fraud if it hit him in the face. SSA has people who investigate the different types of fraud and it's more than just looking at a database. He's not calling in beneficiary's, interviewing them, doing home visits, looking at their bank records, talking to their payee AND THEN asking for the misused funds to be reimbursed. If he was in SSA doing anything, he'd also know that SSA recovers misused funds or overpayments. SSA actually recoups funds so he's lying and anyone who believes him, I have beach front condo in Arizona to sell them.

All they say about these government programs is that they have found massive fraud, waste, and abuse. It would be helpful to have actual examples of the fraud that they have allegedly found. That seems to be an important piece of the puzzle that they just won't reveal.

I’d say it’s blind leading the blind but the blind wouldn’t be so misled. The artful fraudster leading the willfully obtuse, perhaps.

I trust the individual with the chainsaw. I thought that President Elon had read only privileges?

I look forward to hearing the very specific details about this fraud waste and abuse that's going on at such incredibly high levels and yet is so easily found by some algorithm that's been around for a week.

They keep saying this and providing no specifics. If all of this existed, why didn't Gauleiter Dudek and his crew find it? Why didn't OOG? Those are the functions of their departments. How incompetent must he and his coworkers have been not to have identified any of it? Perhaps the waste and fraud was coming from inside of those components, and given Gauleiter Dudek was a Senior Management Analyst with supervisory duties, one has to wonder about why he wasn't more effectively managing his subordinates in identifying these issues.

I can just about guarantee that their response would be that these metrics are using bad data to arrive at predetermined conclusions to help cover it up. Of course, the real issue is that they will absolutely not provide the data they are using to come to the conclusions, and will simply rely on public perception that the government is run by and full of people who are either incompetent or willfully acting in bad faith. They should be expected to show their work and provide evidence for their claims. There is little reason to think they ever will, because it would allow people who actually understand the information to tell them why they are wrong.

That should say OIG, not OOG.

Does this story fall under the category of fighting fraud, waste and abuse. I thought inflation would be taken care of in day ONE? Isn’t this Treasury Secretary’s job?

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Sunday that his department will be creating an "affordability czar" to address high prices in the U.S. — a continuing concern for Americans which Bessent says he is "laser focused on."

Bessent described the new role at the Treasury Department as "someone who picks the five or eight areas where this administration can make a big difference for working class Americans." He also previewed the creation of an "affordability council."

Has Doge published anything on purported SSA waste that hasn't come from public sources? Even his Ponzi scheme talk comes from right wing media. Maybe he doesn't understand what a Ponzi scheme is, but it's not something you'd uncover with an algorithm trolling through the data.

I wonder how long it will take the next democrat administration to fully restore government personnel?

Musk is totally lying about finding huge amounts of fraud, waste and abuse at SSA. He also falsely implied SSA was paying people who were 150 years old. Musk should have been fired by Trump by now, but apparently the Republicans are into the big lie.

What scares me now is he has the data and he's running it thru his AI model. Now what is he looking for and also what did he manipulate the model to do?

Do you have any idea what would happen in this country if that dire prediction came true? There would be civil unrest like you have never seen. You cannot just "cancel" the income of almost 72 million people, many of whom rely on that as their sole income. Your predication does not make any sense and is conceived by a dire hatred for and distrust of Trump.

Are you serious? This movie has only begun. The midterms are until 2026 and much damage can be done in the meantime.

So on the one hand SSA claims they are woefully underfunded and that payment centers basically have shut down due to a lack of funding. Yet SSA also claims their accuracy is immaculate and there is a zero error rate with kit a smidgen of waste or abuse. Make it make sense.

What scares me the most is people are still believing what is said. If you say it enough some will believe whether it is true or not.

A problem would be in even finding the numbers of people who would choose to work for the Government. Even now, if they wanted to hire at least the 10,000 people that they are down from pervious staffing levels, and even without the threat of being fired as soon as you are hired, they could not find the staff needed at the pay rates they could offer.

about 30 years. who is going to want to work there knowing every four years they can just drop you for no reason other than election outcome.

Anonymous said...

Where has SSA claimed a zero error rate? I don’t think anyone disputes that SSA has fraud and improper payments challenges. I just think the public data suggests those challenges may not be the things currently in the news.

In response to the baseless claims of payments to claimants over 150 years old, the Agency did an audit and determined that exactly 60 people over the age of 110 are currently receiving benefits.

That ship has sailed. The trust has been broken. Who in their right mind would ever want to work in the federal govt, when all it takes is a fascist administration to come in and fire people at will and without cause and everyone just watches it happen and does not do a damn thing! These used to be good secure jobs. NOT ANYMORE! And it is the American public that will pay.

Social Security has never missed a benefit payment since the program first began sending individuals monthly benefits more than eight decades ago.

But the recent actions at the U.S. Social Security Administration by Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency are putting monthly benefit checks for more than 72.5 million Americans at risk, former commissioner and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley told CNBC.com.

“Ultimately, you’re going to see the system collapse and an interruption of benefits,” O’Malley said. “I believe you will see that within the next 30 to 90 days.”

Ahead of any interruption in benefits, “people should start saving now,” O’Malley said.
